Soccer City Stadium is biggest stadium from entire Africa which will host World Cup 2010 final. It is located in Johannesburg, South Africa, near SAFA House (South African Football Association). It’s capacity is more than 94000 seats.
The stadium was opened in 1989, but in 2009 it was renovated and extended to fit FIFA criteria for hosting such an important match like a World Cup Final (actually, is something else more important than a soccer World Cup final? ).
South Africa team play its home matches on Soccer City Stadium.
Before the upgrade, the Stadium’s capacity was 80.000. It was “tested” in ’96 when South Africa organize African Cup of Nations. Three matches were played as “sold-out” (South Africa – Cameroon - the beginning match, Ghana v Zambia – third place match and South Africa v Tunis – the final).
When Nelson Mandela was released from prison, Soccer City was site for his first speech. Also, Chris Hani’s (former leader of South African Communist Party) funeral took place on this stadium.
Soccer City will host eight matched at this World Cup edition, two of them with high importance ( the final of the competition and the beginning game):
